Sean Tarjyoto was born in Macau and immigrated from Hong Kong to Oregon with his grandparents in the mid-1980s. He naturalized 2016, in his hometown of Portland. You may recognize him in his role as a beleaguered alternative weekly journalist, Angus on the Hulu series, Shrill (2019). Though he has appeared in a variety of TV shows and movies, including NBC's Grimm: Contos de Terror (2011), IFC's Portlandia (2011), and the Emmy-winning comedy, Shrill (2019). He also starred in the independent film PIG: A Vingança (2021) and the dark comedy Sometimes I Think About Dying (2023). He graduated from New York University's Gallatin School with a focus on art and sociology, but it was his non-matriculated time at Columbia University where he rediscovered his love of acting. He starred in several award-winning shorts, including Mr. A (2008), which received a rare two-way tie for Student Oscars, and The Queen (2010), directed by Christina Choe (Nancy (2018)), which won the Iris Prize and screened at prestigious festivals such as Telluride, SXSW, and Aspen. He went on to study documentary, journalism, screenwriting, and video editing at the Hunter College MFA program and then focused on acting in the Meisner approach at the Ward Studio in New York City. He also worked at The People's Improv Theater in exchange for admission to their training program.
