Sunny Chen is a Canadian actor and interdisciplinary artist. At 6 years old, Sunny immigrated from Nanjing to Coast Salish lands. Raised in Langley, they toured Western Canada and America with their school choirs and concert band. At 17, they moved to Vancouver, and completed their BA in Psychology and English literature at the University of British Columbia.
Sunny won the secondary lead in Karin Lee's period drama Ts'ekoo Cha Ke: The Girl with Big Feet to play Ho Shee, a merchant's wife in 1800s Barkerville. For this complex role, Sunny prepared her dialogue in Toisan (a Chinese language from southern Guangdong province) and Chinook (an Indigenous PNW trade language). She portrayed Lisa in Cheer Squad Secrets (2020), starred in a commercial shot in Mexico City, and appeared in minor roles on Um Milhão de Coisas (2018), Supergirl (2015), and Um Natal Mais Doce (2019). An emerging filmmaker, Sunny writes and directs Open Ethnicity (2021) episodes, and cast Sunflower Girl.
With music available everywhere as Sad China and Sunny Daydream, they blend art pop with emo and 2000s R&B. They write in English and Mandarin, and collaborate with up-and-coming talent. In 2023, Sunny was recognized by Women in Music Canada and awarded a national Honour. Through Blackout Art Society, Sunny wrote, produced, cast, and starred in their debut original play End of a Cycle. They portray River, an insomniac who seeks help from ancestors to dance battle a power-hungry Demon (Bennett Taylor), and heal from generational trauma. Their mindfulness video "here" (2021) exhibited at Latitude 53 for the soil between plants. The artist enjoys lifelong friendships, singing to wildlife, and sunset skates along the seawall. Sunny embraces every storytelling opportunity, and advocates for equitable representation in front of and behind the lens.
